Cleared at 19:55. Ecstatic.
The flight is over. You've landed. You're walking through Changi with your carry-on, and somewhere in this airport is your pet — and you have no idea exactly where, or what's happening to them right now.
This is the part of the journey nobody fully prepares you for. Not because it's dangerous — because it's opaque in a way that feels deeply uncomfortable when it's your animal on the other side of it.
Here is what's actually happening.
The moment you land
If your pet flew in-cabin, they came off the plane in their soft carrier. But that carrier can't go to CAPQ. CAPQ requires a hard, IATA-compliant crate for the transfer.
The first thing that happens — before luggage, before anything — is a crate swap. In the handicap-accessible restroom in the arrivals area. You transfer your pet into a hard crate, then tape the original documents to the outside. Not copies. Originals.
If the originals don't travel with your pet to CAPQ attached to the crate, clearance gets delayed.
The Lost & Found handover
Once the crate swap is done, you head to the Lost & Found counter near the baggage belt. You declare your in-cabin pet, hand over document copies, and ground handling staff take your pet from there.
And then you wait. You cannot follow your pet past this point. Everything from here is your agent's job.
What happens at CAPQ
Ground handling staff transport your pet to CAPQ inside Changi Airfreight Centre. Your agent meets them there. The AVS officer verifies all documents: import licence, health certificate, vaccination records, titer test report, captain's declaration. Budget roughly 2–3 hours from handover to clearance.
If CAPQ is closed when your pet arrives, they stay overnight at the ground handler's animal holding facility at approximately S$26 per night. Not in any agent quote we've seen. Entirely avoidable with the right arrival timing.
What makes it manageable
A good agent gives you a contact — a name and a WhatsApp number — before you board. Not a general inbox. A person who will be at CAPQ on arrival day and will message you when your pet is cleared.
That single detail changes the experience. Instead of refreshing your phone in the back of a taxi, you get a WhatsApp at 8:15pm saying your dog has cleared and is on the way. It just requires knowing to ask for it before you hand your pet over.
